Who we are
ren is an education technology platform operated by Ren Education Pte. Ltd., a company incorporated in Singapore. We build tools that help teachers mark student work and give students faster, more detailed feedback.
This notice explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to our websites at reneducation.com and to the ren products, including Ren Learn (renlearn.app), Rubric, Rex and Radar.
What personal data we collect
Account information. When a teacher or student creates an account we collect their name, email address, and the school or organisation they belong to. If an account is created using Google, we receive the name, email address and profile picture associated with that Google account. Authentication is handled by Clerk; we do not store passwords ourselves.
Student work and academic records. This is the most significant category of data we handle. It includes scanned or photographed answer scripts and handwriting, essays and typed submissions, marks and grades, teacher comments, and the feedback our systems generate. It also includes derived records such as which topics a student has struggled with.
Class and roster information. Class lists, the assignment of students to classes and teachers, and attendance or participation records where a school provides them.
Programme-specific data. For certain partner programmes we collect additional details required by the programme operator, which may include a contact telephone number and academic history.
Usage and technical data. Pages visited, features used, device and browser type, IP address, and error diagnostics. We use PostHog for product analytics and Sentry for error reporting.
How we collect it — including data we receive from schools
Most personal data reaches us in one of two ways.
Directly from you, when you create an account, submit work, or contact us.
From your school, teacher or programme operator. This is important to understand. A teacher may upload a set of answer scripts, or a school may provide us with a class roster, without the individual student having interacted with ren at all. In these cases we rely on the school or programme operator to have obtained the necessary consent, and to have made this notice available to students and their parents or guardians. Our agreements with schools require them to do so.

Why we use it
We use personal data for the following purposes, and no others:
- To provide the service — marking submitted work, generating feedback, and returning results to the correct teacher and student.
- To produce the analytics and progress reporting that teachers and schools use to understand how a class or cohort is doing.
- To authenticate users and keep accounts secure.
- To diagnose faults, monitor reliability, and improve the accuracy and usability of the product.
- To communicate with you about the service, including support and material changes.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not use student work for advertising.
Where your data is stored and transferred
Our primary databases and file storage are hosted in Amazon Web Services' Singapore (ap-southeast-1) region. We chose this deliberately so that student records stay in Singapore by default.
Some of the service providers listed above process data outside Singapore. In particular, the AI model providers we use are located in jurisdictions including the United States and the People's Republic of China. Where personal data is transferred out of Singapore, we take steps intended to ensure it receives a standard of protection comparable to that under the Personal Data Protection Act 2012.
How long we keep it
We keep personal data only for as long as it serves the purpose it was collected for, or as long as we are required to keep it by law.
Account information is kept for as long as the account is active. Student work, feedback and academic records are kept for as long as the associated school or teacher account remains active, so that students and teachers can revisit earlier work and follow progress over time. Usage and technical data is kept on a rolling basis for analytics and diagnostics.
When a school ends its subscription, or when personal data is no longer needed for the purposes set out in this notice, we delete or anonymise it. You may also ask us to delete personal data we hold about you at any time by emailing hello@reneducation.com. Where the records you appear in are controlled by your school, we may need to refer your request to them, and we will tell you if that is the case.
How we protect it
We use industry-standard measures to protect personal data, including encryption of data in transit, access controls that restrict data to the teachers and schools it belongs to, private file storage accessible only through short-lived signed links, and monitoring for unauthorised access.
No system is perfectly secure. If a data breach occurs that is likely to result in significant harm, or that affects a significant number of individuals, we will notify the Personal Data Protection Commission and affected individuals as required under the PDPA.
Your rights
Under the PDPA you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you, and information about how it has been used or disclosed in the past year.
- Correct personal data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Withdraw consent to our collection, use or disclosure of your personal data. Note that withdrawing consent may mean we can no longer provide the service.
To make a request, email us at hello@reneducation.com. We will respond as soon as reasonably possible, and in any case within 30 days. If we cannot respond within 30 days we will tell you when we expect to.
If you are a student, some requests may be routed via your school, since your school controls the class records you appear in. We will tell you if that applies.

Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. If we make a material change to how we use personal data, we will notify affected users before the change takes effect. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
